Great readers make great writers. My ceaseless reading took root in the tiny hamlet of Papakaio, New Zealand. My American parents moved our family to New Zealand in 1982, just when Americans were despised for breaking a treaty and wanting to dock nuclear-powered submarines in “no nukes” New Zealand’s ports.
At 8 years old, I was expected, by my peers, to handle this international dispute. So, I stuck my nose into the nearest book.
